Kimberly Hall North

WINDSOR, CT – August 10, 2021 – The Kimberly Hall Campus, which is home to two skilled nursing facilities, today announced that Viola Whilby, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Kimberly Hall North, and Florise Damas, a Certified Nursing Assistant at Kimberly Hall South, were recognized as Compassionate Caregivers of the Year (CCOY) at their respective facilities.

Modeled after the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care's national recognition program, CCOY is a unique and uplifting way to recognize and celebrate staff members who go above and beyond the standard of compassionate care. Ken Schwartz, who founded the Schwartz Center while undergoing treatment for advanced lung cancer, learned the importance of staying in the moment with patients, noting that "the smallest acts of kindness" make "the unbearable bearable."

“Viola Whilby has worked at Kimberly Hall North for over 20 years,” said Center Executive Director of Kimberly Hall North, Elza Augustin. “Viola works on the Memory Support Unit and has a personality and caring way that leaves an impression with families, residents and co-workers. She goes above and beyond in making sure that all of the residents' needs are met, and that they are happy and comfortable.”

“Viola gets to know her residents through family members so that she can ensure their needs are met,” continued Augustin. “For example, with all new residents, she asks family members about their loved one’s likes, their past jobs and interests so she can learn ways to help redirect them if they become agitated. We recently received a call from a family member who said ‘Viola made me feel comfortable. After I left my first visit, I felt a sense of reassurance and relief which I didn't have before. Viola made me feel like my husband was a real person again and wanted to know what he was like before the dementia.’”

“Florise Damas has been a nurse aide at Kimberly Hall South for 30 years,” said Center Executive Director of Kimberly Hall South, Thomas Russo. “Florise is an extremely patient caregiver and goes above and beyond in providing care to her residents, tapping into their specific needs. During the pandemic, when the families could not visit and the hairdresser was not in, Florise went above and beyond to be there for her residents. She would make sure her residents’ hair was always curled and the outfits were always perfectly matched.”

“Although visitation was limited during COVID, Florise would assist her residents by helping them connect with families through face-time, phone calls and zooms,” continued Russo. “This allowed Florise to build close relationships with residents’ families even during the several months when visitation was not allowed. Florise always receives thank you cards from resident families and this year was no exception. We are truly blessed to have such a caring CNA on the Kimberly Hall South team for the past 30 years.”

CCOY award recipients were nominated by patients, residents and families in their respective facilities. Both Viola and Florise will now be entered into Region-Level Recognition, with one recipient selected from among all of Genesis HealthCare’s affiliated centers and communities throughout the region. If the CCOY is chosen at the regional level, they then move onto national Company-Wide Recognition, selecting from among all the chosen Region-Level Compassionate Caregivers.  A National CCOY Company-Wide Recognition will be awarded later this year.
