Independent and heading home!
Three days after last Christmas, Diane arrived at the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center needing six liters of oxygen per hour for respiration difficulties plus two staff members and a hydraulic lift to help her transfer from her bed to a wheelchair.
Experiencing significant pain, Diane was unable to stand without assistance. Not accustomed to depend on others or a machine to help her through tasks most people take for granted, Diane said, “I didn’t want to use the lift, I just wanted to stand on my own.”
Less than two months later, Diane is literally standing on her own two feet, independently, thanks to a two prong approach to physical rehabilitation – her hard work in the physical and occupational therapy department and a dedicated rehabilitation team at the center.
“Diane is one of the most determined patients we’ve ever worked with, said one of the center’s rehabilitation center’s specialists. “She always gave it her best effort. Patients like Diane inspire us as therapists and inspire others patients around her.”
Diane has a lot to look forward to when she gets home – a warm welcome from her puppy whom she hasn’t seen in what seems like forever. She can’t wait to peruse the aisles of the local grocery store on her own picking out ingredients for her lifelong passion, cooking.
“You guys have all been so good to me… all the nurses, aides, the staff in activities and most of all, the rehab staff, said Diane, adding, “I would definitely recommend the center.”
Meet Richard “Rip” Ripchick
Rip was admitted to Springfield Health & Rehab Center after a stroke, which caused weakness in his left leg. Rip was familiar with the facility as his wife had been a previous patient. When he arrived, he could not walk more than 30 feet and was dependent on a wheelchair. After spending time with our rehabilitation therapy team, Rip is now walking with his walker from his room all the way down to the gym! Rip grew up and raised a family in Springfield. He is an Army Veteran and worked with the Springfield Police Department for 24 years. He is looking forward to getting back home and it looks like he will be ready within the next week! Congratulations Rip on your hard work and recovery!
