LOCH RAVEN CENTER IN BALTIMORE TO CONVERT TO TEMPORARY COVID-19 REHABILITATION CENTER
Baltimore, MD (April 17, 2020) – Loch Raven Center, a post-hospital rehabilitation and long-term care facility located in Baltimore, Maryland today announced it will temporarily convert to a coronavirus (COVID-19) post-acute care center in order to assist hospitals in expanding capacity during this unprecedented crisis. This facility will assist in the care and recovery of these patients.
As the COVID-19 pandemic expands exponentially in Maryland, Loch Raven Center is poised to assist hospitals who are inundated with COVID-19 patients. Loch Raven Center is responding to the Public Health Emergency in Maryland due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Center is in communication with the Maryland Department of Health and partner hospitals to ensure a smooth transition.
Loch Raven Center plans to safely discharge individuals to home if their current health status permits, or will safely transfer patients to near-by affiliated Genesis facilities where their care will be continued. The Center is testing all patients and residents in the building to ensure they are negative for COVID-19 prior to transfer. The Center will ensure as smooth a transition as possible for all of the patients.
“In a relatively short period of time, many in Maryland’s public, private and nonprofit communities have quickly pivoted from their standard operating protocols to meet the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,” David Marcozzi, MD, MHS-CL, FACEP, Associate Professor, University of Maryland School of Medicine and COVID-19 Incident Commander, University of Maryland Medical System. He adds, “Loch Raven Center’s decision to wholly transition to treating COVID+ patients provides a much needed continuum of care which will immediately provide additional statewide health care capacity. We thank the Center, its leadership and the extraordinary efforts being put forth by Maryland’s health care workers during this critical time.”
“The decision to transition Loch Raven Center to a COVID+ only building is proactive and will be very beneficial for the many people that will need dedicated nursing home care recovering from this illness,” states Morgan Katz, MD, MHS, Assistant Professor of Infectious Disease, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Loch Raven Center will allow us to remove positive residents from other facilities and cohort them appropriately, thereby reducing transmission risks in other facilities. It will also serve as a much needed release valve for hospitals needing to discharge patients that need nursing home care who are COVID positive. At the State level, we should work to divert our resources and PPE to supporting this transition.”
Loch Raven Center is a 113-bed building and will be ready to admit COVID+ patients on April 20, 2020.
