CANYON TRANSITIONAL REHABILITATION CENTER TO CONVERT TO TEMPORARY COVID-19 REHABILITATION CENTER4/10/2020
Albuquerque, NM (April 10, 2020) – Canyon Transitional Rehabilitation Center, a post-hospital rehabilitation and long-term care facility located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, today announced it is converting the center to a temporary coronavirus (COVID-19) post-acute care center in order to assist hospitals in expanding capacity during this unprecedented crisis.
As the COVID-19 pandemic expands throughout the state, Canyon Transitional is poised to assist hospitals who are inundated with COVID-19 patients. While plans are not yet definitive, the Center is coordinating with the New Mexico Department of Health, the New Mexico Department of Aging & Long-Term Services Department and partner hospitals to ensure a smooth transition from a rehabilitation center to a skilled nursing facility for COVID-19 positive patients and residents.
Next week, Canyon Transitional plans to safely discharge 54 individuals from the facility directly home, if their current health status permits, or will safely transfer patients to another facility where their care will be continued. The Center will work with patients and their families to find the best location for their care needs and to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.
“We want to express our appreciation to Canyon Transitional for helping the community prepare for the possible surge of COVID-19 patients in New Mexico,” said Dr. Vesta Sandoval, Chief Medical Officer of Lovelace Health System. “A post-acute rehabilitation facility for COVID patients who are stabilized and recovering is greatly needed right now. Canyon Transitional plays a very important role in helping us free up available hospital beds in our facilities in the event that the pandemic continues to expand in our community and state.”
Following this news release, our partners at the State of New Mexico will be providing additional comments about the transition.
