BURLINGTON HEALTH AND REHABILITATION CENTER DISCHARGES SHORT-TERM REHABILITATION PATIENTS

Burlington, Vermont - March 24, 2020 - Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center (BHRC) today announced that the majority of its short-term rehabilitation patients currently residing at BHRC will be discharged to the DoubleTree by Hilton Burlington and cared for by University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) clinicians. Both BHRC and UVMMC are working in coordination with the State of Vermont to safely reintegrate BHRC’s short-term rehabilitation patients back to the community after a period of time per health authority guidelines.

Typically, BHRC short-term patients are discharged directly to home after they are well enough. Given the Coronavirus pandemic, we have the opportunity to transition certain short-term patients to the care of UVMMC as an extra precaution before patients can return to the community. While no current short-term rehabilitation patients have tested positive for COVID-19 and none of these patients are exhibiting symptoms, this coordination will help to quarantine all discharging patients for a period of time before they can return to their home. This additional step is meant to keep patients isolated until there is no risk of contagion.

Patients from BHRC began discharging from the facility today at 1:00 pm. All patients and responsible parties have already been notified of the transfer and have given their consent. Transfer to the DoubleTree Hotel is a voluntary process. “We would like to thank UVMMC and the DoubleTree for providing a safe location for our short-term patients to quarantine before they ultimately safely return to the community,” said Dr. Larry Smith, Regional Medical Director for BHRC.

At this time, BHRC will not transfer any residents from its remaining floors, as they are not short-term patients. BHRC continues to follow the Vermont Department of Health and CDC guidelines to the letter to limit the spread of the virus. Steps taken include: quarantining residents to their rooms; removing employees in close contact with the individual and asking them to self-quarantine for 14 days; requiring employees to wear personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, gowns); conducting twice-daily patient and resident temperature and symptoms monitoring; deep cleaning the facility; and increasing frequency of surface cleaning.
