Sedgewood Commons, a Genesis HealthCareSM Skilled Nursing Facility located in Falmouth, Maine, today announced they recently received the 2013 Celebrating Excellence in Innovation Award during a recognition ceremony held at the Augusta Civic Center.  Maine First Lady Ann LePage joined the sponsor, Maine Health Care Association (MHCA), to present the Celebrating Excellence in Innovation Awards. The award is given annually to long term care providers that have designed and implemented an outstanding program that has demonstrated success in improving resident quality of life/care, enhancing employee development and relationships or engaging community members or groups in facility life.

To be considered, nominees must meet certain criteria, including demonstration of a best practices approach and tangible results to show that the creative ideas and practices have contributed to resident quality of life and care. Nominations for the award were submitted by long term care facilities statewide and winners were selected by an independent panel of judges with long term care expertise.

According to MHCA President and CEO Richard Erb, “Maine’s long term care facilities provide compassionate quality care on a daily basis. Providers are genuinely committed to trying new approaches and techniques to better serve their residents.  This luncheon and awards program are a tribute to their dedication and our way of saying thank you – we appreciate your efforts in the pursuit of innovation.”  MHCA is a nonprofit trade association representing 250 long term care providers statewide including nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  Sedgewood Commons, a Specialized Alzheimer's Homestead Community offers individualized care for those living with Alzheimer's Disease or other forms of dementia. Each member of the dedicated team has specialized education and training. Sedgewood Commons promotes consistent relationships with staff and residents to provide an ongoing routine, which is very important to those with dementia. Sedgewood Commons is an AHCA Silver Quality Award winner.

“Our commitment to quality care and everyday compassion is the foundation of what we do,” notes Administrator, Gary Currier.  “Our patients, residents and their families value our quality clinical care, compassionate staff, pleasant surroundings and proximity to home and hospital.  I am so proud of the hardworking committed staff at our center who have made this award possible.”
