PHCA COMMENDS SCHUYLKILL CENTER FOR ACHIEVING HIGHEST HONOR FROM STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
5/14/2013 12:00:00 AM

HARRISBURG --- The Pennsylvania Health Care Association (PHCA) today commended one of its members, Schuylkill Center in Pottsville, for achieving the state’s prestigious “Award of Excellence in Health Care Compliance.”  Only two of the state’s 711 nursing centers earned this high honor, which is awarded to facilities that have had deficiency-free surveys three years in a row.

The Schuylkill Center, owned by Genesis HealthCare of Kennett Square, is a 190-bed skilled nursing center in Schuylkill Center.  The award was presented by Acting Secretary of Health Michael Wolf.

“This is an incredible accomplishment, and the staff at Schuylkill Center should be very proud,” said Stuart H. Shapiro, MD, PHCA’s President and CEO.  “Nursing homes are one of the mostly highly regulated professions because they care for our commonwealth’s most frail, sick and elderly citizens. It’s very difficult for a nursing center to achieve even one deficiency-free survey but to have three in a row is truly remarkable.”

Nursing home regulations cover all aspects of resident life, from safe preparation and storage of food to protecting residents from abuse to quality care practices.  There are more than 150 regulatory standards that nursing centers must meet.

“Today’s award is a testament to the great quality care that the Schuylkill Center team provides to its residents.  We congratulate them and we celebrate with them.” Dr. Shapiro said.
