GENESIS HEALTHCARE CENTERS SUCCESSFULLY IMPROVING QUALITY CARE
2/6/2014 12:00:00 AM

[Kennett Square, PA] – Genesis HealthCare, one of the nation’s largest providers of skilled nursing and rehabilitation, today announced that thirteen of its skilled nursing centers have achieved all four of the Quality Initiative Goals set in place by the American Healthcare Association in the initial year of AHCA’s Quality Initiative Recognition Program.

“Collectively, we’ve seen great progress when it comes to the Quality Initiative, but today we celebrate the individual centers for their tremendous success,” said Mark Parkinson, President & CEO of AHCA. “In a short time, these skilled nursing centers have devoted themselves to these goals and exemplified what the Quality Initiative is ultimately about - improving the lives of the individuals we serve.”

The Quality Initiative Recognition Program recognizes AHCA nursing center members that demonstrate the attainment of one or more of the four AHCA Quality Initiative goals:

  • safely reduce hospital readmissions within 30 days during a skilled nursing stay by 15 percent;
  • increase staff stability by reducing nursing staff turnover by 15 percent;
  • increase customer satisfaction by having 90 percent of residents and families willing to recommend their center to others; and
  • safely reduce the off-label use of antipsychotics by 15 percent.

Nationwide, AHCA set out to achieve its hospital readmission, staff stability and customer satisfaction goals in three years, while its antipsychotic goal is aimed for the end of 2013. The Quality Initiative Recognition Program honors member skilled nursing centers that have already achieved these goals. In the effort’s initial year, 2,728 member centers safely reduced hospital readmissions; 1,370 centers increased staff stability; 825 increased customer satisfaction; and 4,339 safely reduced antipsychotic medications in accordance with the Quality Initiative goals.

“These centers are leading the charge on our journey to promote better outcomes in long term and post-acute care,” said Dr. David Gifford, MD, MPH and Senior Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at AHCA. “Their achievement in the first 12 months of our initiative is both impressive and demonstrates that our three-year goals are achievable.”

Determining which member centers qualified for the Recognition Program required AHCA analyzing members’ Minimum Data Set (MDS) data on hospital readmissions and antipsychotics. Also, member centers had to submit staff turnover data for 2011 and 2012, as well as a survey reporting customer satisfaction data for 2012 to the Association.

The Recognition Program is a tiered approach; as members achieve more goals, they earn higher recognition. In the first year of the Quality Initiative, Tier I (one goal achievers) totaled 3,758 member centers, Tier II equaled 1,944 centers and Tier III amounted to 448 centers. Sixty-eight AHCA member centers nationwide attained Tier IV, achieving all four goals of the Quality Initiative.
